Our church is focused on bringing the community together as one body in Christ.
St. John M. B. Church, located on Dumas Road approximately four miles east of Ripley, MS, was established in 1899. Land was purchased from Brother Charlie Hatch. In 1909, a small amount of land was purchased from Brother Thomas Bruce for $11.00. In addition, another property was acquired from Brother Henry Williams for $50.00. In 1911, a new church was constructed under the leadership of Pastor Curt of Corinth, MS.
This church has been an institution of influence for young people. A community school was established. The teachers included: Mr. John Berry, Mr. Little, Mr. Grant Simmons, Mr. Orlando Vicks, Mr. Delber Guyton, and Mrs. Lizzie Guyton. The Usher President was Sister Loretta Rogan, the Oldest Mother was Sister Wilanna McDonald and the Oldest Deacon was Joe Vance.
In October of 1980, Rev. G. T. Thompson was called to lead the church. Pastor Thompson was also employed in Benton County as a school teacher. He served faithfully for 34 years. He was a gifted musician as well as an anointed teacher and pastor.
Our Mission at St. John Missionary Baptist Church is to pursue and persuade men, women, boys, and girls of every ethnic group and/or socioeconomic group, through the enriched power of the word of God, that there is no life as beautiful as the one serving Jesus Christ our Savior.
Pastor
In October of 2013, the church elected Rev. Billy Geanes as Pastor. He was officially installed in January of 2014. Pastor Geanes was a member of Rainbow Push Coalition under the leadership of Rev. Jesse Jackson. He attended College of DuPage, Moody Bible Institute and Morris Booker College. Dr. Geanes also earned his Doctoral Degree in Ministry from Jacksonville Theological Seminary.
Pastor Geanes envisioned the church being self-sufficient. As a result, under his leadership, his previous church opened several businesses including a restaurant, bookstore, ice cream parlor, car wash and beauty supply store.
During his leadership at St. John, Rev. Geanes has organized an effort to help the people in Flint, Michigan. The church has also fed the community on several occasions.
He is married to Dr. Parthenia Geanes who is a retired Language Arts Teacher at Ripley Middle School. She also earned a Doctoral Degree in Ministry from Jacksonville Theological Seminary. They have been blessed with several daughters: Eboni Presswood, Donella Lewis, Sharonda Porter, Nakisha Watson, Courtney Hendrix, Sashay Riddle, Lady Lorraine Wright, along with a host of spiritual children.
Pastor Geanes is currently the host of “Sunday School Review” on 92.7 WKRA in Holly Springs, MS and 104.9 KUDZU in Ripley, MS. He is an anointed teacher, preacher, visionary, as well as an innovative leader with a community mindset.
